Intraoral Appliance for Paediatric Salivary Control

Drooling is a frequent challenge in children with neuromuscular disorders, developmental delay, or reduced orofacial muscle tone. The Castillo Morales appliance is a custom-made intraoral device designed to provide targeted sensory stimulation to the oral structures, thereby enhancing oral awareness, tongue posture, and functional muscle activation. This chapter reviews the clinical background of drooling, outlines the theoretical foundations of the Castillo Morales concept, and describes the design features, mechanisms of action, and clinical protocol for the Castillo Morales appliance. Available evidence, including short- and long-term observational data and findings in children with Down syndrome, is critically appraised, with particular attention to its limitations and the need for more robust studies. Practical considerations, interdisciplinary management, and emerging digital and growth-adaptive technologies are also discussed to guide clinicians involved in paediatric drooling management.
