Flying Cars: Technostalgia in Science Fiction Movies and TV Shows

In science fiction film and television shows set in a future U.S., often we see flying cars. It seems difficult to imagine the future in the U.S. without cars. While science fiction is often thought of as representing concerns of the present or new complex futures, flying cars can bring a sense of nostalgia, specifically a form of technostalgia. Flying cars signal the future, but they are rooted in our past and present. While nostalgia as a general concept in fiction is often examined, technostalgia is not as well scrutinized. Why is there technostalgia for something that never truly existed yet signals the future?
