摘要

This study explores the paradox of how cryptocurrency ideals claim to promote financial freedom and fairness by bypassing traditional banking intermediaries, yet also create new avenues for crime without the normal financial safeguards, such as removing the ability to reverse fraudulent transactions. These ideals also reproduce some recurring challenges that have existed in monetary systems across time and culture, which raise the question as to whether a crypto utopia is possible. Ethereum and Bitcoin’s evolution are used as case studies to analyze how protocol decisions impact narratives, communities, and token behavior. Crypto’s ongoing efforts to address onboarding (the process by which new participants enter the ecosystem), scalability, affordability, interoperability, and cost can often result in decisions that impact incentive structures for participants and builders in the ecosystem. This can play a critical role in token market value and overall adoption. This study draws on historical events as well as on chain and macroeconomic incentives that drive the ecosystem.
