The Effect of Extension of Dubai Creek on Water Circulation

Dubai Creek, an artificial seawater channel in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), was extended in 2016. Since then, water quality concerns have been arising. In this study, two-dimensional models were developed using Delft3D Flexible Mesh to evaluate the hydrodynamic and flushing effects of the extension. In particular, simulations of the water circulation patterns and residence times before and after the extension were performed. Furthermore, calibration and validation were utilized using field data, including current speeds, directions, and water levels, to accurately represent real-world conditions. Results showed substantial improvement in water renewal and flushing efficiency in the extended Creek. Also, residence times were considerably shorter, especially in areas where poor circulation had been identified. The observation points showed improved flushing dynamics, where conservative tracer concentrations dropped to lower levels compared with the old Creek. This study has demonstrated the added value of numerical modelling in guiding urban coastal developments and emphasized the extension's role in improving hydrodynamic performance and the general water quality at Dubai Creek.
