Analysis of Road Capacity and Levels of Service for the Implementation of an Urban Public Transportation Corridor Huancayo—Perú

Transport is a fundamental element for the economic, social and environmental development of a country, and the progress of a society is reflected in the evolution of its transport systems and the quality of its urban infrastructure. In the case of the city of Huancayo, Peru, disorderly growth has been driven, to a large extent, by an informal public transport system that expands in a dispersed and chaotic manner. In addition, the increase in private vehicles has further aggravated this problem, negatively affecting urban mobility, quality of life and the development of the city. To address this problem, the level of vehicular congestion was assessed through field studies at eleven stations for one week, where manual counts were made and vehicles were classified, which allowed obtaining precise data on vehicular flow. Likewise, traffic light times were recorded and intersections were characterized according to their geometry, road orientation and location of the traffic light system. Later, with the collected data, road capacity and service levels were analyzed using the methodology of the HCM 2010 Road Capacity Manual. Subsequently, the Synchro Studio 8 software was used, which simulated vehicular flow representing the current transportation situation in the city. In this way, it is evident that the main causes of vehicular congestion are the high demand for vehicles, roads not designed for the high influx of vehicles and the lack of planning regarding public transportation.
