Populism, Power, and the Futures of Indonesian Democracy

This concluding chapter examines how populism has become a normalized part of Indonesia’s political system, shaping both public communication and the inner workings of democratic institutions. It argues that populism is no longer limited to campaign moments but now operates as a routine way of governing through emotional messaging, digital platforms, and procedural controls. Drawing on insights from across the book, the chapter explains how ideological, performative, algorithmic, and institutional forms of populism interact to influence voter behavior, public debate, and state authority. It also outlines three possible future paths for Indonesian democracy from deepening authoritarian tendencies, to a more capable hybrid system, to a more ambitious democratic renewal driven by participatory reforms. The chapter further considers whether competent and ethical leaders can still rise in a political environment dominated by spectacle, influencers, and algorithmic visibility. Overall, it invites readers to reflect on how Indonesia can “humanize” populism and strengthen institutions so that claims made in the name of “the people” support, rather than weaken, democratic life.
