Sustainable Educational Practices: Integrating Environmental Studies at Different Levels
摘要
This chapter discusses the integration of environmental studies at any level of education for enhancing sustainable educational practices. Given the need to respond to any environmental challenge as fast as possible, this chapter examines existing frameworks of environmental education. Their effectiveness is also gauged as a way of strengthening students’ environmental literacy and facilitating behavioral change for sustainability. This chapter identifies key implementation challenges through a combination of global surveys, case studies, and policy analysis. It explains the transformative potential of holistic integration of environmental studies into primary, secondary, and tertiary education systems. A multi-disciplinary approach combining theory and practice is encouraged for equipping students with holistic perception of ecological systems and their social consequences. Outcomes: If environmental education is mainstreamed as an integral part of the school curriculum, then awareness regarding sustainable practices among the students will enhance their potential for positive contributions toward achieving Sustainable Development Goals. This also creates a demand for innovative pedagogical practice, inclusive stakeholder participation, and positive policies over barriers to optimize the output. The present research study provides the following practical guidelines to instructors, policymakers, and institutions regarding designing and implementing effective environmental education programs to breed lifelong environmental awareness. These exercises may be important in breeding future leaders and citizens for well-being on earth.
