Digital Education for Sustainable Development Goals Implementation in Vietnam

As the global momentum for digital education transformation intensifies, digital education has emerged as a core driver of the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely Goal 4 on Quality Education. Vietnam, as a rapidly developing nation in the Asia-Pacific region, has positioned digital education as a central component of its national strategy for implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This chapter, therefore, reviews and discusses the integration of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) into Vietnam’s national education system through digital platforms and policies. The chapter opens with an overview of the state of education for sustainable development in Vietnam, particularly within preschool and general education. It then addresses key national policy documents, such as Decision 2161/QD-BGDDT (2017) and the National Action Plan for the implementation of the SDGs. The chapter further investigates how digital learning has been used to integrate sustainability skills into curricula, pedagogy, and learning environments. It also addresses key challenges, including policy fragmentation, teachers’ poor digital preparedness, and gaps in cross-sectoral coordination. In its conclusion, the chapter provides strategic recommendations to the government, educational authorities, schools, and teachers for optimizing digital learning as a driver of ESD. These include strengthening institutional capacity, improving access to digital technologies, and promoting coordination among stakeholders to ensure the effective, high-quality, and equitable implementation of ESD in Vietnam.
