Traditional Arabic Built Environment and Sustainable Designs: Their Impact on the Emerging Trends

摘要

Traditional Arabic architecture contains design methods that correspond with environmental performance goals in contemporary sustainable construction. A conceptual framework has been developed to evaluate the relevance of architectural elements such as mashrabiya, courtyards, wind towers known as barjeel, and thermal mass construction. The framework organizes these features into three performance dimensions that include thermal comfort optimization, resource conservation, and climate-responsive design. The study has adopted techniques and their environmental rationale to propose an integrated model that can align the vernacular methods with modern sustainability standards. The framework developed is able to address the relationship between cultural preservation and environmental efficiency within the policy context of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 sustainability program. The analysis is guided by five objectives. The first defines principles of sustainable heritage. The second establishes performance criteria. The third develops strategies for integration. The fourth identifies methods of adaptation. The fifth creates evaluation metrics. This framework can provide architects and planners with a structured reference for the application of traditional Arabic design elements in modern construction suited to hot-arid climates.
