The Role of EDGE Tool in Advancing Energy-Efficient and Sustainable Design in Emerging Economies

Emerging economies face mounting pressure to embrace energy-conserving and eco-friendly design methodologies due to escalating environmental issues and the necessity for economic adaptability. Nevertheless, these areas frequently encounter substantial obstacles, such as limited financial resources, inadequate regulatory frameworks, and a lack of technical expertise. The EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) tool, created by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), offers a pragmatic solution by streamlining the integration of resource-efficient approaches into architectural designs. This research explores the significance of the EDGE tool in advancing sustainable construction practices in developing markets, providing a comprehensive analysis of its functionality and efficiency. By utilizing localized information and adjustable benchmarks, EDGE assists project teams in attaining quantifiable reductions in energy, water, and material usage. Through an assessment of actual case studies, the research showcases how EDGE has empowered developers to fulfill sustainability goals while ensuring economic viability. Additionally, this study assesses EDGE’s broader influence on capacity building within the construction sector, encouraging a deeper understanding of sustainable design among stakeholders. The results emphasize the tool’s potential to bridge the gap between ambitious eco-friendly building goals and the tangible challenges of construction in resource-limited environments. By illustrating its capacity to drive significant improvements in sustainability outcomes, this paper positions EDGE as an essential tool in promoting global initiatives toward environmentally conscious development.
