Blockchain for Agri-Supply Chain Traceability

In the context of globalization, consumers are becoming highly attentive to the authenticity, safety, and legitimacy of their food. Policymakers and governments are similarly prioritizing nutritional security alongside food availability for the general population. The global agri-food supply chain faces persistent challenges, including food counterfeiting, contamination risks, and inefficient product recall procedures, highlighting the need for improved traceability and transparency. To address these issues, the agriculture sector is adopting blockchain technology, a distributed and decentralized digital ledger, to create secure, transparent, and trustworthy food systems. This chapter examines the role of blockchain in strengthening traceability by overcoming the limitations of traditional systems, which often rely on centralized databases, fragmented data, limited stakeholder transparency, and manual, paper-based processes. Blockchain provides decentralization, immutability, real-time transparency, and enhanced security, enabling comprehensive end-to-end tracking from farm to consumer and offering verifiable records at each stage of a product’s lifecycle. This chapter further emphasizes the transformative potential of blockchain technology through real-world applications in the agri-supply chain. For instance, Walmart, in partnership with IBM and Tsinghua University in China, successfully reduced pork product traceability time from days to seconds. The Coffee Board of India and Eka developed a blockchain-based marketplace that offers real-time pricing and transparent trading to over 350,000 coffee growers. Starbucks collaborated with Microsoft to develop a digital traceability tool that allows users to follow coffee beans from farm to cup, thereby promoting transparency and improving consumer trust. By exploring these cases, this chapter demonstrates both the advantages and challenges of integrating blockchain technology into agri-food supply chains. While the technology enhances food safety, operational efficiency, and trust, issues such as high implementation costs, scalability, data integrity, and regulatory uncertainty need to be addressed to realize its full potential. In conclusion, blockchain offers a transformative approach to enhancing traceability and ensuring secure, transparent, and resilient global agri-food supply chains.
