Harnessing Plant Biodiversity for Resilient Food Systems

The accelerating crisis of climate crisis, growth in population, environmental degradation, and food insecurity around the globe demand the need for sustainable and resilient food systems. Plants are able to be used as a transformative approach to enhance agricultural resilience because of their diversity and genetic variation. Because of the biodiversity and genetic variability of plants, they could be resistant against extreme weather conditions, pests, and diseases. Hence, this will provide stability in food production under fluctuating environmental conditions. The diverse cropping systems also improve soil health by reducing the reliance on chemical inputs. Nutritional security from plant biodiversity can be achieved by integrating these crops into the food chain, including underutilized crops and crops of neglected importance, which include all essential vitamins and minerals and show great potential to help staple crops in order to obtain a balanced diet. In addition, the incorporation of plant biodiversity into agricultural systems underpins several vital ecosystem services such as pollination, pest control, and regulation of the water resource that are essential for sustainable agriculture. Conservation of wild relatives of crops provides further opportunities for the creation of a genetic reservoir for breeding resilient crop varieties to ensure long-term agricultural sustainability. However, to tap the full potential of plant biodiversity, it is essential to develop supportive policy and innovative approaches, i.e., conservation of genetic resources, promotion of agrobiodiversity through research and extension services, and market development of diverse crops. While collaborative efforts are required from governments, institutions of research, farmers, and the private sector to develop an enabling environment for the sustainable use of plant biodiversity, harnessing plant biodiversity is not an option; it is a necessity for building up resilient food systems that can withstand challenges posed in the current times. By embracing the diversity of plant species, it would be possible to secure food production, improve nutritional quality, and encourage sustainable agricultural practices that contribute to the well-being of both the people and the planet.
