Foods as Medicine
摘要
The idea of food as medicine dates back to the times and is still in the practice of disease prevention and health promotion. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins contain nutrient-dense foods which provide essential bioactive compounds that aid immune processes, regulate inflammatory processes, and maintain metabolic homeostasis, such as antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals. The components have been linked to lower risk of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and some types of cancers. Foods with high probiotics additionally increase the balance and general immunity of the gut microbiota. Nutritional science has clarified the action of major bioactives, e.g., curcumin and omega-3 fatty acids, which supports the use of functional foods and nutraceuticals in the contemporary diets. New technologies in the field of accurate nutrition allow customization of dietary therapy according to genetic and metabolic specifics of the individual. Nevertheless, issues exist such as strong clinical validation and increased access to nutritious foods. Evidence-based policies and awareness about nutrition would be important in integrating nutrition into healthcare systems so as to utilize the full therapeutic potential of diet in sustainable and preventative healthcare.
