Impact of Climate Change on Food Security and Biodiversity of Pakistan

摘要

Climate change has emerged as one of the most significant threats to biodiversity conservation and food security, particularly in developing countries such as Pakistan, where agriculture and natural resources are central to livelihoods and economic stability. Rising temperatures, erratic precipitation patterns, prolonged droughts, floods, glacier melt, land degradation, deforestation, and unsustainable resource exploitation are accelerating biodiversity loss and undermining agricultural productivity. These environmental changes are threatening diverse ecosystems and vulnerable species while adversely affecting major food crops, including wheat, rice, maize, cotton, and sugarcane, resulting in reduced yields, disrupted food supply chains, and heightened risks of food insecurity. Additional pressures from pollution, soil degradation, water scarcity, invasive species, and habitat fragmentation further exacerbate ecological and agricultural vulnerabilities. This chapter examines the complex interactions between climate change, biodiversity, and food security in Pakistan, highlighting the ecological, socioeconomic, and policy dimensions of these challenges. It evaluates existing conservation and climate adaptation frameworks and explores strategies such as climate-resilient agriculture, ecosystem restoration, sustainable natural resource management, biodiversity conservation, technological innovation, and community-based adaptation. The chapter emphasizes that safeguarding biodiversity and ensuring food security require integrated, multi-stakeholder approaches involving government institutions, scientific communities, local populations, and the private sector. Strengthening policy implementation, public awareness, and climate adaptation measures is essential for building resilient ecosystems, sustainable food systems, and long-term environmental sustainability in Pakistan.
