摘要

Plant biodiversity is closely connected with the idea of nutritional stability and global food security. The chapter discusses the importance of plant genetic resources, plant species and ecosystems in the development of resilient and sustainable food systems. It emphasizes the great importance of crop diversity in improving nutritional stability, covering the regional imbalances, and the danger of excessive dependence on a small pool of staple crops. The chapter highlights the significance of the wild food plants (WFPs), neglected and underutilized species (NUS), and traditional types of crops in increasing the dietary diversity, nutrition and health, especially among the vulnerable population. It also underlines the importance of the biodiversity in safeguarding the environment against stress and climate change, ensuring a steady crop, and ecosystem processes. The chapter concludes by highlighting the importance of biodiversity in terms of soil health and system sustainability by comparing the disadvantages of industrial monoculture with advantages of agroecological practices, such as crop diversification, agroforestry, and regenerative agriculture. In addition, destruction of habitats, climate change, and other irresponsible activities that cause the loss of biodiversity create serious dangers to the availability of food as well as the quality of food. The chapter ends with an important aspect on the urgent necessity of effective conservation plans that include seed banks, gene banks, and supportive policies that would combine traditional knowledge and modern science. It is necessary to move to food systems based on biodiversity in order to attain sustainable development concerns and the provision of sustainable food and nutrition security to the growing world population.
