Community-Led Plant Biodiversity Conservation in Pakistan: Case Studies and Lesson Learnt

Pakistan possesses remarkable plant biodiversity, encompassing more than 6,000 vascular plant species distributed across diverse ecosystems ranging from coastal zones and deserts to alpine regions. This rich biological heritage plays a critical role in maintaining ecosystem stability, supporting livelihoods, and sustaining traditional healthcare systems. However, plant biodiversity is increasingly threatened by habitat degradation, deforestation, overgrazing, unsustainable resource utilization, invasive species, climate change, and the erosion of indigenous knowledge. This chapter examines the status, threats, and conservation of plant biodiversity in Pakistan through selected case studies from diverse ecological regions, including deserts, forests, mountain ecosystems, and rangelands. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of local communities, traditional ecological knowledge, and community-led conservation initiatives in safeguarding biodiversity and promoting sustainable resource management. The chapter highlights successful conservation approaches, including participatory forest management, habitat restoration, biodiversity monitoring, and the documentation and transmission of ethnobotanical knowledge. Both in situ and ex situ conservation strategies, such as protected areas, botanical gardens, seed and gene banks, and germplasm conservation programs, are critically reviewed. The chapter underscores the importance of integrating scientific research, traditional knowledge systems, policy support, and stakeholder engagement to strengthen biodiversity conservation efforts. It concludes that community-centered conservation, supported by effective governance and institutional collaboration, is essential for preserving Pakistan’s plant biodiversity and ensuring ecosystem resilience and sustainable development in the face of growing environmental challenges.
