Ex Situ and In Situ Conservation Strategies for Medicinal Plants of Arid Climates

摘要

Medicinal plants constitute an invaluable component of biodiversity, supporting traditional healthcare systems, local livelihoods, and ecosystem resilience, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. Arid ecosystems, which cover nearly 41% of the Earth's terrestrial surface and sustain more than two billion people, harbor a rich diversity of medicinal plant species adapted to harsh environmental conditions. However, these valuable genetic resources are increasingly threatened by climate change, habitat degradation, overharvesting, overgrazing, deforestation, soil erosion, invasive species, urbanization, and weak conservation policies. This chapter examines the ecological, economic, and cultural significance of medicinal plants in arid ecosystems, with particular emphasis on Pakistan’s diverse flora and ethnomedicinal heritage. Major threats to medicinal plant biodiversity and their implications for ecosystem stability and sustainable livelihoods are critically evaluated. The chapter further reviews contemporary conservation approaches, including in situ strategies such as protected areas, biodiversity hotspots, habitat restoration, and community-based conservation, alongside ex situ methods including botanical gardens, seed and gene banks, cryopreservation, in vitro conservation, and germplasm preservation. Emphasis is placed on integrating traditional ecological knowledge with modern conservation technologies, sustainable harvesting practices, policy interventions, and stakeholder participation. The chapter concludes that effective conservation of medicinal plant biodiversity requires interdisciplinary collaboration, strengthened regulatory frameworks, public awareness, and adaptive management strategies to ensure the sustainable utilization and long-term preservation of these critical biological resources for future generations.
