Role of Beliefs and Practices in Natural Resource Management: Insights From the Gaddi Tribe, Himachal Pradesh

The integration of Western scientific knowledge and Indigenous knowledge is a debatable issue. Historically, this dichotomy stems from Western science’s dominance and triumph, which often subjects Indigenous knowledge to its scientific gaze. However, in recent years, the environmental crisis has urged scholars to recognize the valuable knowledge embedded in the socio-cultural practices of Indigenous communities for protecting natural resources. The paper is based on anthropological fieldwork conducted among the Gaddi tribe in Jia Khas village, Kangra District, Himachal Pradesh. The study’s primary objective is to explore the Gaddi community’s beliefs and practices in natural resource management. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with community members. The findings indicate that the Gaddi community has developed beliefs and practices to manage village and forest resources, contributing significantly to sustainable resource management. However, these traditional practices are increasingly threatened by developmental programs, environmental changes, and forest rights regulations. Therefore, understanding the insider perspectives on the Indigenous beliefs and practices of the Gaddi tribe is essential for effective natural resource management and to achieve conservation goals.
