Challenges and Future Directions of Emerging Technologies in Disability Rehabilitation

This chapter highlights the key challenges, ethical concerns, and future directions in integrating emerging technologies to rehabilitate individuals with physical disabilities. Recent technological innovations have expanded rehabilitation horizons through user-friendly features such as engagement, interaction, precision measurement, concurrent feedback, and real-time monitoring. These technological innovations offer promising solutions to enhance physical function; however, their implementation is often limited, especially in low-resource settings, due to limited accessibility, high costs, training gaps, inadequate infrastructure, and limited cultural adaptability. The chapter sheds light on the ethical considerations. It provides insight into future directions, such as incorporating AI-driven personalised intervention plans to enable flexibility and adaptation in rehabilitation processes, keeping in view the physical, mental, and social aspects of patients. It focuses on the importance of involving end-users in technology development and ensuring inclusivity across age, ability, and socioeconomic backgrounds. These considerations are important to ensure the engagement of all stakeholders in the process, ensuring that technology-driven rehabilitation remains ethical, effective, and sustainable and responsive to the needs of people with physical disabilities.
