Physical Illnesses and Depression
摘要
As societies age and medical advances extend life expectancy, more individuals are living with chronic physical illnesses. In addition to common conditions such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and hypertension, many patients face chronic pain disorders (e.g., arthritis) and rarer, treatment-refractory illnesses, including systemic lupus erythematosus and multiple sclerosis. The burden of these diseases—coupled with treatment resistance and fear of relapse—predisposes patients to depression. When depression accompanies a physical illness, it magnifies symptom severity, impairs daily functioning, and undermines adherence to both medical regimens and self-care, thereby diminishing overall treatment efficacy. Severe, untreated depression may even lead to suicide. Consequently, timely identification and management of depression must be an integral component of comprehensive medical care.
