Effects of Parental Depression on Child Development

This chapter examines the effects of parental depression on child development across perinatal, cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and neurobiological domains. Children of depressed parents are at increased risk of early-onset, recurrent, and severe psychiatric disorders. While maternal depression is more extensively studied, paternal depression also predicts adverse outcomes, including impaired social functioning and internalizing behaviors. Biological mechanisms, disrupted parent–child interactions, and family stress are central mediators, with symptom severity and chronicity serving as key predictors. Emphasis is placed on early detection, timely treatment, and family-based interventions to mitigate intergenerational risk and promote healthy development.
