Future Trends and Challenges in Internal QA for Higher Education

This chapter examines the future trends and challenges shaping Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) systems in higher education, driven by rapid transformations in digitalization, globalization, stakeholder expectations, and sustainability demands. It explores how technologies like learning analytics, artificial intelligence, and digital platforms are redefining QA processes, enabling real-time, data-driven decision-making while raising ethical concerns around privacy and algorithmic fairness. The rise of transnational education, micro-credentials, and hybrid learning models poses challenges for aligning IQA with diverse regulatory frameworks and ensuring equitable access. Shifting stakeholder expectations emphasize student-centered QA, employability outcomes, and societal impact, necessitating inclusive and transparent practices. The chapter also addresses the integration of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into IQA frameworks and the need for crisis-responsive systems to enhance institutional resilience. Drawing on global case studies and frameworks like the European Standards and Guidelines (ESG), it offers insights for higher education institutions, particularly in post-Soviet contexts like Azerbaijan, to modernize IQA systems.
