IOL Calculation in Phakic Eye (Phakic IOL Calculation)

As we all know, phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) is an intraocular lens that is implanted surgically into the eye to correct refractive errors without removing the natural crystalline lens (also known as “phakos,” hence the term). Phakic intraocular lens is indicated for patients with high refractive errors when the usual laser vision corrections (LVC) (such as photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), Lasik, or laser lenticule extraction) are not suitable or contraindicated due to some reasons (myopia over −12 Diopters (D)) or corneal thickness less than 500 microns, or corneal thickness not sufficient for patient’s refractive error correction). Phakic IOL also gives a clear postoperative vision without inducing any high-order aberration (spherical aberration) to the patient.
