Biomechanical Analysis of Badminton Stroke and Lunge in Trained and Untrained Players

Introduction There are occurring incidences of musculoskeletal disorders experienced by untrained badminton players due to improper lunge and action. Therefore, it becomes necessary to determine the movement and action which are more appropriate for the badminton. Aims and Objectives This study focuses to obtain the kinetic and kinematic parameters associated with trained and untrained badminton players. Methodology In this study, the kinematic parameter, upper arm-elbow joint flexion angle while striking the shuttle with a racket, was recorded using 3D motion capture system. The kinetic features, ground reaction forces, were measured using force plate during the lunge of player while striking the shuttle with racket. The above parameters were obtained from 20 male volunteers, both trained and untrained badminton players, age 20 ± 2, in three different actions (toss or clear, lift, smash). Result and Discussion The percentage of deviation in elbow joint flexion angle and ground reaction force was observed to be high [p < 0.05] with untrained badminton players as compared to trained professionals. Conclusion This research enables the understanding of risks involved in untrained badminton players and helps them to maintain optimal lunge and action to prevent the injuries and pain.
