Sports Injuries and Their Association with Field Tests, Age, and BMI in Female Volleyball Players in West Bengal, India

Introduction: A recent trend of research in Sports science is to discriminate the risk of injury in various athletic population by analysis of functional performance tests (FPT). However, similar work in volleyball is rare. Aims and Objectives: Study the major types of lower quadrant injury and their association with broad jump (BJ); vertical jump (VJ); age and body mass index (BMI) in female volleyball players in West Bengal, India. Methodology: Stratified random sampling technique was used for selection of subjects (85 players, age: 11–30 years). Standardized tests and self-administered survey questionnaire were used for data collection. Statistical analysis applied: Mean ± SD, Pearson’s correlation (r), and ANOVA. Result and Discussion: The most common injury was found for ankle sprain and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, lower quadrant injury displays a strong correlation (p < 0.001) with age. The overall lower quadrant injury was significantly correlated (p < 0.05) with the broad jump but not correlated with the vertical jump. Only the knee injury displays a significant correlation (p < 0.05) with BMI. The ANOVA study found existence of significant (P < 0.001) difference for knee injury between different age groups. Conclusion: Proper warming up, cooling-down exercises, and systematic resistance training are crucial for strength of muscle, bone joints, and recovery.
