Safa-E: Designing Ergonomic Solutions for Temple Waste Management

Introduction Temples play a significant role in the cultural and spiritual lives of communities in India, yet the management of temple waste poses environmental and social challenges. The current practices focus on provisional solutions rather than sustainable and culturally respectful approaches. Temple waste primarily refers to solid wastes like dried flowers and leaves, garlands, coconut shells, earthen lamps, incense sticks, and sweet boxes, which are sacred in nature, but the existing temple waste management practices are inadequate. Aim and objectives In this paper, we aim to bridge the gap by exploring how responsible waste management can be implemented in temples to raise awareness among devotees as well as to enhance the ergonomics of the work environment for temple cleaners. Methodology A comprehensive study across multiple temples was conducted to identify the drawbacks of current practices while ensuring the preservation of the sanctity of offerings. Using various analytical methods on the collected data, insights were gained that highlighted government apathy and the importance of sanctity. Results The study’s findings led to the aim of making temples self-sufficient in waste management. This study introduces an innovation called Safa-E, a smart waste management solution which facilitates a “from the temple to the temple” approach. Conclusion The introduction of Safa-E represents a key advancement in sustainable temple waste management, combining modern technology with cultural respect. This solution improves the lives of those involved while seamlessly integrating technology into temple practices.
