Cholangiocarcinoma

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is categorized into three types: intrahepatic (10%), perihilar (70%), and distal (20%). Extrahepatic CCA presents with painless, progressive cholestatic jaundice. The type and extent of liver resection for hilar CCA depend on the Bismuth–Corlette classification. Most hilar CCAs require caudate lobectomy along with major liver resection because of the proximity and drainage of the caudate ducts with the biliary confluence. Neo-adjuvant chemo-radiotherapy followed by liver transplantation is emerging as a potential treatment in selected cases of CCA.
