Complications of Cholecystectomy

Common postoperative complications of laparoscopic cholecystectomy include bleeding (0.79%), retained common bile duct (CBD) stones (0.5%), and bile duct injury (BDI) (0.3–0.5%). A bile leak after surgery appears as an external biliary fistula when there is a subhepatic drain. The presence of acute cholecystitis, adhesions, aberrant arterial anatomy, cirrhosis of the liver, and portal cavernoma is an important cause of bleeding during LC. Residual or recurrent stone in the gallbladder or cystic duct remnant, or CBD can cause ongoing postoperative symptoms. Its management involves revision surgery and endoscopic removal for CBD stones, respectively.
