Nanotechnology in Imaging, Diagnostics, and Cancer Treatment

Cancer continues to be one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in humans, primarily due to metastatic cancer and systemic toxicity caused by conventional treatments. This chapter outlines the role of nanotechnology in transforming the current state of cancer therapy, but with a primary focus on its use across imaging, diagnostics, and therapeutics. Various nanomaterials, like liposomes, polymeric nanoparticles, and magnetic materials, used in the preparation of very sensitive diagnostic tools and superior contrast agents for molecular imaging, are elaborated in detail. The main discussions encompass state-of-the-art advancements in the therapeutic applications developed through nanocarrier systems by enabling targeted drug delivery aimed at maximizing the local concentration of therapeutic agents at the tumor site, while minimizing the adverse effects on healthy tissues. Integrated multifunctional platforms, involving both diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities, improving the field of cancer treatment, are also discussed. Finally, this chapter considers several translational challenges that nanomedicine is facing, such as issues concerning nanoparticle toxicity, biocompatibility, and the related complex regulatory pathways toward clinical approval. At the end, nanotechnology holds great promise in allowing very precise, effective, and patient-oriented cancer management.
