Future Directions of AI–IoT in Smart Urban Planning

AI–IoT integration sits at the intersection of urban transformation, climate pressures, and evolving governance structures; a convergence that demands a planning-centered interpretation of digitalization. Rather than framing AI–IoT as a purely technological enhancement, the analysis that follows in this chapter emphasizes its implications for planning paradigms, institutional coordination, and sustainability-oriented governance. AI–IoT integration is understood here as a strategic enabler of data-informed planning and urban governance, supporting sustainable and resilient urban development aligned with global agendas such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The chapter explores how intelligent systems influence housing governance, mobility systems, water management, environmental resilience, regenerative urbanism, and participatory platforms; domains in which AI–IoT systems reshape relationships between infrastructure, institutions, and communities. It also addresses future governance challenges, including data management, accountability, equity, and regulatory adaptation. It argues that the long-term significance of AI–IoT integration depends less on computational advancement and more on the capacity of planning institutions to embed digital systems within coherent, inclusive, and sustainability-oriented frameworks. Intelligent urban systems, in this view, must be understood as part of a broader transformation in planning practice rather than as isolated technological tools.
