Remunerative Floriculture
摘要
Floriculture has emerged as a profitable option within modern agriculture, offering higher economic returns per unit area than many traditional crops. Growing demand for flowers in religious, cultural and therapeutic contexts has created vast potential for employment generation and rural income enhancement. Floriculture, a high-value enterprise, is especially relevant for small and marginal farmers aiming to move beyond subsistence farming. The chapter highlights current trends and challenges in this sector. The integration of hi-tech interventions, including protected cultivation, drip irrigation, fertigation and soilless systems, has made it possible to grow flowers round the year with improved quality. Postharvest handling and value addition techniques, including drying, oil extraction and advanced packaging, are outlined to minimize losses and thus improve marketability and returns. The chapter further explores niche segments such as edible flowers, floristry, seed and bulb production, turf grass and bonsai, which offer profitable avenues with relatively low competition. The role of supportive policy frameworks, access to institutional credit and linkage with research and development institutions is examined to understand the enabling ecosystem. Floriculture has transformed livelihoods when supported by innovation, planning and market orientation. In sum, the chapter aims to provide a comprehensive view of the floriculture sector’s economic potential and practical pathways to make it a sustainable and remunerative component of diversified farming systems.
