The success of horticultural ventures depends heavily on the quality of planting material used. Ensuring that this material is healthy, true to type, and free from pathogens is essential for achieving consistent productivity and superior crop performance. Time-tested propagation methods such as cutting, grafting, and budding have long supported nursery operations by enabling the localized multiplication of desirable cultivars. When applied with scientific precision, these techniques enhance plant vigor, crop uniformity, and resilience under varying agro-climatic conditions. In parallel, biotechnological advancements have introduced new possibilities in the form of plant tissue culture, with micropropagation emerging as one of the most efficient techniques. It offers rapid, large-scale, and sterile production of high-value horticultural crops, particularly those that are difficult to propagate through conventional means. Crops like banana, turmeric, strawberry, and a variety of ornamentals have shown excellent responses to tissue culture, with the added advantages of uniformity, genetic stability, and year-round availability. The growing establishment of commercial tissue culture laboratories marks a significant development in the sector, enabling not only a consistent supply of quality plantlets but also contributing to entrepreneurship and employment generation. These labs meet the increasing demand for virus-free and climate-resilient planting material, both in domestic markets and for export. When integrated thoughtfully with traditional nursery practices, such biotechnological interventions pave the way for precision horticulture. Moreover, policy interventions, public–private collaborations, and financial support from government schemes are making this transition accessible to a broader range of stakeholders, including young agripreneurs and rural enterprises. The strategic combination of conventional propagation and commercial tissue culture represents a robust and future-ready approach to planting material production. It strengthens the horticultural value chain, enhances farm profitability, and supports the sector’s shift toward innovation-driven, sustainable growth.
