STERI-FREEZ: A Nonelectric Sterilization Device with a “Cool” Green Biocide

Each year, more than 20 million people worldwide suffer from postsurgical infections, primarily due to inadequate cleaning or sterilization of medical instruments. This challenge is particularly acute in developing nations and remote regions where access to reliable sterilization infrastructure is limited. Conventional sterilization methods often depend on complex equipment, steady power supply, and trained personnel, resources that are frequently unavailable in low-resource settings. STERI-FREEZ presents a simple yet effective alternative. It is a portable, electricity-free cold sterilization device designed to decontaminate surgical instruments using a biocidal formulation known as the Flash Freeze Elixir (FFE). This formulation combines a non-toxic biocidal action with sub-zero cryogenic temperatures (as low as −80 °C) to achieve rapid and complete microbial inactivation. Sterilization is accomplished through a straightforward immersion process; surgical tools are submerged in FFE for approximately 15 minutes, requiring no electricity, no pressurization, and leaving no toxic residues. Beyond sterilization, STERI-FREEZ also enables short-term aseptic storage of sterilized tools and can serve as a portable cold-chain system for vaccines, biological materials, and temperature-sensitive reagents. Its design and functionality make it especially valuable in rural healthcare facilities, medical outreach camps, disaster-relief operations, and military field hospitals, where conventional systems are impractical. In essence, STERI-FREEZ represents a frugal yet transformative innovation that enhances surgical safety and infection control in under-resourced environments, thereby contributing to improved healthcare outcomes and global health equity.
