Sustainable Absorbent Nature-Friendly Antimicrobial Innovation in Disposable Sanitary Pads

Sanitary pads are essential menstrual hygiene products that provide comfort and cleanliness. However, most commercially available pads are predominantly plastic-based, posing significant environmental and health challenges. These nonbiodegradable products can persist in the environment for centuries and may cause skin irritation due to chemical additives. In countries like India, affordability further limits access for women from lower-income groups. This chapter presents an innovative, sustainable, and cost-effective alternative, an eco-friendly sanitary pad designed to decompose within 6 months. The pad is composed of biodegradable materials such as cotton, corn starch, and Plantago ovata (psyllium) seed powder, providing natural absorbency and comfort. The addition of clove oil imparts antibacterial properties, and ultraviolet (UV) light sterilization ensures product hygiene. This innovation offers a safe, affordable, and environmentally responsible menstrual hygiene solution, contributing to public health and sustainability goals.
