Future Directions of Rheumatology Care in the Arab World

  • Khalid A. Alnaqbi

摘要

Rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases represent a growing health burden across the Arab world, necessitating strategic reforms in workforce development, clinical services, education, research infrastructure, and patient engagement. Building on the region’s historical legacy of medical scholarship, this chapter presents a forward-looking framework for strengthening rheumatology care systems across the 22 Arab countries. Key domains addressed include workforce expansion and distribution, modernization of clinical services, personalized medicine, biosimilars and innovative therapies, telemedicine integration, accreditation of rheumatology centers, fellowship and nursing program development, procedural skill enhancement, and regional research collaboration. Emerging digital innovations, including artificial intelligence, wearable devices generating digital biomarkers, and computational disease models such as digital twins, are also discussed as potential tools to support earlier diagnosis, continuous disease monitoring, and personalized treatment strategies. Structural barriers to research growth are analyzed, and a multilevel roadmap is proposed to transition from identifying systemic gaps to implementing sustainable solutions. This approach can enhance care quality, reduce disparities, and position the Arab world as a meaningful contributor to global rheumatology science.
