A Systematic Review of Advanced Manufacturing Technologies (AMT)

This chapter presents a systematic review of academic research on Advanced Manufacturing Technologies (AMT) to clarify how digital transformation has been studied in manufacturing. By extending the methodology of Stornelli et al. (2021), this chapter reviews recent articles published between 2019 and 2024 in leading management and operations journals. The analysis identifies several major research streams, including early manufacturing IT systems such as ERP, capability-based perspectives rooted in the resource-based view and dynamic capabilities, architectural perspectives emphasizing modularity and system integration, and research on Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing. Although many studies highlight the potential benefits of digital technologies, the review reveals that performance outcomes vary significantly across firms adopting similar technologies. This heterogeneity suggests that digital tools alone cannot explain transformation success. Instead, organizational capabilities, learning routines, and coordination mechanisms play decisive roles. This chapter concludes that manufacturing digitalization should be interpreted as a process in which analog capabilities and digital technologies co-evolve, thereby motivating the development of the ADX framework introduced in next chapter.
