Developing DX Human Capital in Manufacturing

This chapter examines how manufacturing firms develop human capital capable of integrating digital technologies with operational expertise. While digital technologies such as IoT, AI, and cloud platforms are increasingly available, firms experience widely different outcomes because transformation success depends on workforce capability rather than technology alone. Through comparative case analysis of firms in process industries and equipment assembly sectors, the chapter shows how organizations cultivate hybrid expertise that combines digital literacy with deep domain knowledge. Process industries emphasize interpretation of sensor data within continuous production environments, while equipment manufacturing requires integration between engineering design, production systems, and digital tools. Across both contexts, firms establish cross-functional learning programs, project-based experimentation, and new hybrid roles that translate between digital analytics and physical operations. The analysis demonstrates that digital transformation is fundamentally a human-centered process in which organizational intelligence emerges through interaction between employees and digital systems. DX human capital thus becomes the central mechanism linking technological infrastructure with operational performance.
