AI in Manufacturing Innovation: The Airion Case

This chapter examines artificial intelligence as a new interface between analog skills and digital systems through the case of Airion, a manufacturing-focused AI venture originating from the University of Tokyo. Unlike conventional AI vendors that treat analytics as an external optimization layer, Airion positions AI within the operational core of manufacturing systems. Its technologies focus on domains where tacit knowledge remains dominant, such as factory automation control, ladder programming, and troubleshooting support. Rather than replacing human judgment, Airion’s approach emphasizes “integrative AI” that assists engineers in interpreting patterns, simulating outcomes, and documenting operational reasoning. This human-centered design ensures that AI recommendations remain interpretable and actionable within operational communities. By embedding AI into existing production routines, Airion enables organizations to scale experiential knowledge and accelerate learning cycles without undermining the role of skilled practitioners. The case highlights how AI can function as a bridging mechanism that connects human expertise with digital analysis, reinforcing the complementary relationship between analog capabilities and digital technologies central to ADX.
