This chapter will first trace the historical development of lithic use-wear analysis, with a focus on the current research of use-wear analysis of quartzite artifacts. It will also clarify the basic concepts and terms involved in this study, elaborate on the specific research procedure, and outline the book’s overall structure to lay a foundation for the in-depth discussion of relevant issues concerning use-wear analysis on quartzite artifacts in subsequent chapters.
