Bioethanol Production from Agricultural Waste: Pathways and Opportunities

Bioethanol production from agricultural waste presents one of the sustainable solutions to the growing demand for renewable energy worldwide because of the continuous growth in industrialization and population. This allows for reducing the dependence on fossil fuels and mitigating the alarming situation of greenhouse gas emissions. Conventional crops like corn and sugarcane are considered the best feedstock sources for bioethanol production. Still, these feedstocks are incapable of meeting the current growing demand for energy in terms of production and economics, as these are directly linked to the primary value of food and feed. However, the agricultural waste offers a sustainable and abundant feedstock for bioethanol production due to its cost-effectiveness, abundance, and renewability. The challenges associated with bioethanol production exist, like high production costs, the optimized pretreatment methods, and inefficient sugar conversion, despite having its potential benefits. By addressing the technical challenges and leveraging agricultural waste abundance, bioethanol production can play a critical role in achieving renewable energy demands while promoting waste valorization as well as rural economic growth. This chapter explores the pathways and opportunities for converting the lignocellulosic and sugar-rich wastes into bioethanol production, along with addressing the economic, environmental, and technological dimensions.
