摘要

The contemporary world is increasingly confronted with severe environmental challenges, most of which are a result of unsustainable human activities, ecological neglect and widespread environmental illiteracy. A critical factor contributing to these issues is the lack of public awareness and understanding of the adverse impacts of human behaviour on the natural environment. In developing regions especially, environmental illiteracy perpetuates unsustainable practices that accelerate ecological degradation. This chapter explores environmental education as a strategic and transformative pathway to sustainability. By integrating environmental literacy with ethical reasoning and practical engagement, environmental education nurtures a culture of sustainability rooted in ecological responsibility and global citizenship. It emphasizes the urgent need to revitalize and strengthen environmental education systems to cultivate a deeper awareness of ecological balance, foster environmental ethics and inspire collective responsibility for environmental stewardship. Environmental education, when applied strategically, has the power to transform an individual’s behaviour, influence institutional practices and reform public policy. Thus, environmental education emerges as a foundational strategy for achieving environmental sustainability and securing the well-being of future generations.
