Conclusion
摘要
This concluding chapter synthesizes the major findings of the book by examining the transformation of Isan through economic, social, and political dimensions. Economically, infrastructure development, regional integration, and cross-border connectivity have accelerated the region’s integration into national and international markets while simultaneously reinforcing uneven development and labor migration. Socially, urbanization, demographic mobility, cross-border labor and healthcare, environmental conflicts, and changing livelihoods have reshaped communities, creating new opportunities alongside persistent inequalities and social vulnerabilities. Politically, Isan’s transformation reflects a long historical struggle between state centralization and local aspirations for participation, representation, and autonomy. Although decentralization and democratic reforms have expanded electoral institutions, governance remains highly centralized, limiting the capacity of local governments to address regional challenges effectively. The chapter argues that Isan has evolved from a peripheral agricultural region into a strategic gateway linking Thailand with the Mekong subregion and the wider global economy. However, sustainable transformation requires moving beyond government-centered development toward democratic governance characterized by meaningful decentralization, stronger local institutions, greater civic participation, and enhanced regional cooperation.
