Introduction: A Transforming Isan

The Northeast, or Isan, was often perceived as an arid and underdeveloped region in the past. However, this introduction argues that the region’s modern recovery and growth did not result solely from top-down development by the central state, but rather from a long process of historical adaptation. It traces Isan’s historical trajectory from its integration into the Thai state, the roles of the first generation of Isan Members of Parliament, and the Free Thai Movement to its position as a battleground of ideological conflict that prompted a shift from security policy to development policy. As ideological conflict subsided during the 1980s and 1990s, Isan evolved into an economic gateway to the Mekong subregion and became a decisive arena in national politics during the era of the Thai Rak Thai Party, culminating in the Red Shirt movement. These historical developments underscore Isan’s crucial role as a driving force in contemporary Thai democracy.
