Leaf-Derived Textiles Fibers: Sources, Properties, and Applications

The growing need for environmentally friendly, sustainable textile materials has accelerated research into natural fibres derived from renewable biomass sources. Among these, fibres made from leaves have attracted significant interest because they are plentiful, break down naturally, and perform well mechanically. This chapter provides a thorough evaluation of textile fibres derived from leaves, focusing on their origins, characteristics, and uses. The study looks at important plant sources such as pineapple, sisal, abaca, banana, and date palm leaves. A thorough examination of the inherent characteristics of leaf-derived fibres is conducted, including fibre form, chemical composition, tensile strength, flexibility, moisture absorption, and thermal behaviour. The chapter goes on to look at how leaf-derived fibres can be used in clothes, home textiles, technical textiles, composites, and nonwoven materials.
