Agricultural Residue Fibers for a Sustainable Textile Future

The climate catastrophe, growing environmental concerns, and the need for sustainable, ethically sourced goods are all significantly impacting the global textile sector. An effort to find more environmentally friendly alternatives has been spurred by the long-standing criticism of conventional textile production for its excessive reliance on water, pesticides, synthetic chemicals, and non-renewable resources. Sustainability is now a top focus as customers, regulators, and manufacturers alike want more responsible production systems. This forces the sector to investigate materials and procedures that support ecological stewardship and the circular economy. Utilizing natural fibers made from the waste and byproducts of agricultural crops, known as agricultural residue fibers, is one of the most creative and promising solutions in this changing environment. For textile manufacture, materials that were once thrown away or burned, such as banana stems, pineapple leaves, coconut husks (coir), sugarcane bagasse, maize stalks, wheat straw, and rice husks, are now being recycled. These fibers not only help minimize waste and carbon footprints, but also offer farming communities economic opportunities and are renewable and biodegradable. A striking illustration of how textiles and agriculture can work together to support sustainable development and rural empowerment is their conversion of waste into value-added products. This chapter examines the growing potential of agricultural residual fibers to transform the textile industry. It offers a thorough analysis of their origins, extraction techniques, processing strategies, and fiber properties. Along with advancements in material science, design, and production, it evaluates their environmental benefits, including less water consumption, fewer chemical inputs, and carbon sequestration. The chapter also examines their industrial uses in fashion, home textiles, and technology, and assesses the difficulties and prospects ahead. In the end, it presents agricultural residual fibers as vital elements of a socially and environmentally inclusive regenerative textile economy.
