Sustainability in the global textile business is driven by environmental concerns and the goal of reducing water use, chemical pollution, and carbon emissions. Plant-based textiles may be a good alternative because they are biodegradable, renewable, and have a lower environmental impact. This chapter examines emerging sustainable plant-based textile practices, including innovations, circular-economy concepts, low-impact processing technologies, and more efficient agricultural methods. Technological developments have enabled the extraction and use of new plant fibers previously considered agricultural waste. Green chemistry, biotechnology, and enzymatic fiber processing replace resource-intensive processes and toxic solvents. Regenerative farming and agroforestry techniques maximize fiber production and ecological restoration. The chapter also assesses how life cycle assessments (LCA), recycling, and closed-loop systems can be used to measure and enhance the sustainability of plant-based textiles. The primary forces behind future innovation are emphasized as being policy frameworks, industry partnerships, and consumer awareness. The chapter offers a roadmap for how the plant-based textile sector might advance toward a genuinely sustainable future by assessing these strategies and satisfying consumer and environmental expectations.
