The Ptarmigan’s Call

In this chapter, Alastair discusses how he developed a love of nature by hiking through Japanese mountains. He talks about the Japanese attitudes towards mountains and nature as represented by the elusive and endangered rock ptarmigan, or raicho. From his point of view as a long-term foreign resident of Japan, he talks about how he became drawn into the Japanese mountain culture.
