Structural and Dielectric Properties of Polystyrene with Coumarin Dye

With the purpose of investigating the impact of coumarin incorporation on the structural and dielectric properties of the composite material, in this study, self-standing polystyrene (PS) films doped with coumarin (Cou) were synthesised using the solution casting method with varying concentrations of Cou. The films were characterised using X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR analysis), and dielectric measurements. XRD study found that the polystyrene matrix’s crystallinity changed with coumarin incorporation. FTIR spectra indicated the presence of functional group interactions between PS and coumarin, with noticeable shifts in characteristic peaks. Dielectric measurements demonstrated frequency-dependent variations in dielectric constant and loss tangent, suggesting changes in the material’s polarizability and energy dissipation properties. These findings emphasise PS-coumarin composites’ potential to be utilised in optoelectronics and devices for storing energy, where control over dielectric behaviour and structural features is critical.
