Julius Nyerere and His Commitment to the Welfare of the People
摘要
This chapter presents the leadership of Julius Nyerere, a world statesman, who served as the president of Tanzania from 1961 to 1985. In the eyes of many Tanzanians Nyerere was a leader of unquestionable integrity, who, regardless of the outcomes of his policies, had always been profoundly committed to their welfare. Nyerere focused on social and economic self-reliance and equal rights, and was committed to human equality. Therefore, the meaning of welfare for others in African cultures is further analyzed in order to learn more about collective caring leadership in oriental and traditional societies whose leader is expected to take care of his followers, fulfil their basic needs, and create a culture of caring. Nyerere’s leadership can be a model for educational leaders who put forwards notions of caring, humility, equality, and self-reliance in their schools.
