Born in 1879, Mrs. Naidu was a political activist, feminist, poet, and the first Indian woman to be president of the Indian National Congress. After the independence of India, several years before her death in March, 1949, she was also appointed an Indian state governor. Naidu called for an active involvement of women in political struggles, using her role as a jingoistic orator to convince her audiences to believe that female equality was a necessary precursor to the independence of India. In her speeches, she used the ancient Indian method of Nyaya and other various rhetorical techniques to strengthen her arguments both for gender equality and national struggles. Her leadership combines her poetic skills and nationalist ideologies and helps us to construct the elements of poetic educational leadership in our educational systems.
